The debate follows a a last-ditch appeal by disability campaigner Nathan Lee Davies to the First Minister Mark Drakeford, urging the Welsh Government to abandon plans to close the independent living grant scheme in Wales.
Nathan Lee Davies, who has led the Save WILG Campaign, told the First Minister in an open letter last week that closing WILG would leave disabled people with high support needs “at the mercy of cash-strapped Local Authorities who seem intent on cutting vital support packages across the board with no guarantee that further cuts will not follow”.
There is just two months left until the planned closure of WILG, which was set up as an interim scheme following the UK government’s decision to close the Independent Living Fund in June 2015.
Mr Drakeford promised during his campaign to lead Welsh Labour that if an independent evaluation of the WILG closure showed the new system is not working as well as the old one “then I would be prepared to reverse it because this is money intended for a very specific number of people for a very specific purpose”.
The Welsh Independent Living Grant is due to end on 31 March 2019.
