Helping everyone access the information they need.

At Easy Read Wales, part of Learning Disability Wales, we believe everyone should have information they can understand. That’s why we’ve created the Ask for Easy Read guide – a free, practical booklet to help people learn what Easy Read is, why it matters and how to ask for it. You can view or download the guide here.

What is Easy Read and why does it matter?

Making important information easy and accessible is crucial. Easy Read transforms complex information into clear, simple language, supported by helpful pictures and uncluttered layouts.

Easy Read helps everyone, especially people with a learning disability to:

  • Understand important information.
  • Make informed decisions.
  • Participate fully in their community.

It’s also useful for people who:

  • Have trouble reading.
  • Have memory problems.
  • Find traditional documents overwhelming.
  • Are learning English.

When information is too complicated, people can feel excluded. Easy Read breaks down these barriers, promoting equality and inclusion for all.

Why did we create this guide?

Through our work we discovered that many people don’t know how or where to ask for Easy Read. They often don’t realise they can and should ask for information to be provided in a way that suits them best.

Important official information about health, housing and money can feel overwhelming and intimidating. Sometimes there is so much information it can be hard to know where to start. Too often, people miss out on important information. Unclear information leaves people confused, excluded, or unable to act.

Information that is essential for independent living can often be difficult to access, read and understand. Quite often, information is given in a very formal format, and can be hard to understand due to:

  • Complicated language.
  • Small text or cluttered designs.
  • A lack of visuals to aid understanding.

Our guide helps people to ask for Easy Read when they need it. It encourages organisations to prioritise and value accessible communication.

What’s inside the guide?

The guide, available in English and Welsh, explains:

  • What Easy Read is.
  • Why it is important.
  • How and where to ask for it.
  • Examples of the types of Easy Read resources available
